The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!
Yes, the pen is mightier and remember that all emails are a documented recording of your thoughts and intentions.
Never send an accusatory email...always preface any alleged fact with..."apparently....or...it appears to be" ...this leaves the reader open to your "fact" as an assumption on your part and not a hard belief....
This way you can never get stuck with your hand in the cookie jar...you can always clean things up later...
Whoever said that "sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never harm you"...would be out of his/her league today with current and future technology....
Sometimes, it's just better to hit the "ignore" button....keep them guessing...after all...you wouldn't let someone know what your next chess move would be...or....would you!

Auld Lang Syne

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

It's the time of the year to strengthen bonds....embrace new ones....and....forgive those who we feel...are not responsible for their actions...
There are people in our work lives and our personal lives who are socially inept because they haven't experienced life to it's fullest.....these people have issues fitting in....sometimes they slip passed the trained eye and wind up at a desk near you...
As a Human Resources professional I have learned...that... past behavior predicates future behavior...in other words......mental agility has a cap....
If you understand this then you will be all the wiser in creating your alliances...and...if you make a mistake...learn from it and move on...

Advice of the Day

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

The advice is...take things and people with a grain of salt...and...remember...although silence is golden...the other side of the coin is..."no statement is a big statement"....

In a Word....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

"Accept"...to receive willingly ....
"Expect"....to anticipate or look forward...
"Except"....a case to which a rule does not apply...

The Holidays are here.... just the twist of a letter.....
Accept more....Expect less...and... understand there are exceptions to every rule...

Humanness and Being Humane

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!
Your Yenta feels Andy Rooneyish this morning...Did you ever wonder what being human means? why do commercials show the "Humane" Society as animal related? Is there humanness among people or just animals?
It seems to me that animals never hurt each others feelings....have you ever heard a dog talk inhumane about another dog??

The MYOB Club

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

When I was in the fourth grade...(that's a long time ago!) the teacher announced to the class...that I would be the President of the MYOB Club....my heart skipped a beat and I was overjoyed with the attention and recognition, until I found out that this "prestigious" post was for the Mind Your Own Business Club....was I a Yenta  in the making at 10?....probably! But, I always recalled the club and made a special effort in my corporate life to not "buy in" to the rumor mill and definitely not to contribute...I exercised a concerted effort to remain neutral...and left any personal drama...at home..
Don't be the one people come to for a juicy bit of gossip....you know how in families...there's always the one who's on the "outs" and creates chatter....be the one who can be trusted to keep a confidence...it's a much better role...

Giving Notice....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Giving notice doesn't only pertain to your current work situation...it can be a personal choice as well.
One might think that means putting someone or more than one "on notice"....
Just because your Yenta tells you not to burn a bridge and always make sure "they" smile when they think of you..
This doesn't mean that you should accept inappropriate behavior from anyone!
Keep your friends close and your foes closer!
Stand up for yourself...as only you can...

Being Perfect in an Imperfect World....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!
We all want to do our best and sometimes get caught up with "perfection"...my blog is dedicated to those who are either employed and seeking some tips and tricks...or...to those unemployed...who I can offer some advice..on "how to"...
Today, I am veering off the job search...there's an expression...."people come into our lives for a reason"...it goes on "they may stay for a  season"... in this chaotic world .... hope breathes life into "the season"....
Recently, as I entered the world of consulting in semi-retirement...I filled my days with other things...on this path of discovering.."there is life after a career"...I came in contact with a woman who lives north of here but south of where I came...I was in the process of creating a project which failed miserably...I have never met this woman...we have corresponded on a website I joined...I told her of my DYI disaster and without missing a beat she asked me to send it to her for rehabilitation..
In an imperfect world....perfection is lending a hand...

Jingle All The Way....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Thanks for Giving and on to the Holiday Season!
This is the first time your Yenta has been out of NY for the holidays...change is not easy for anyone..and most can only modify slightly..remember, especially at this time of the year....keep your expectations set appropriately...think less and you might get more...people can't change dramatically...they can only modify slightly...so, if you expect more than someone can offer...they only person who will be disappointed is you...
A dream is just a dream....A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline....
In the next few weeks we will have a guest post from my good friend...the one and only "The Employment Goombah!"
Stay Tuned...

Many a False Step is Made by Standing Still

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

In life we can't expect things to come to us...we must seek opportunities.
The best dinner is the one that's prepared in advance...
After all...life is just a recipe...isn't it?..kind of like a personal test kitchen..
Trial and error...at least in error..we know we tried!

The Good Boss

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

I was thinking that I spend a lot of time sharing my tips and tricks on what to do when you are in a "spot".
It seems only fitting the week before Thanksgiving to let my dear followers know that there are "good bosses".
Happening once in my life (and I consider that lucky!) I can tell you it makes the world of difference when you know someone has your back. There is no such thing as "your" mistake...it becomes "our" mistake and "we" fix it.
This manager is confident and in their confidence they instill trust and motivate and yes...the tried and true...lead by example. This doesn't mean they are easy...they are demanding but, hey...who cares because as they push the envelope and you are able to reach your potential...and...they never ask you to do something they wouldn't do themselves.
They have a sense of fairness!
This post is a Thanksgiving tribute to "The Good Boss"....you know who you are...thank you:)

The Case of The Evil Boss

Hello All You Help Wanted Seekers!

Once upon a time everyone encounters "The Evil boss" and, this Yenta is not immune...they come in many forms...some are self-serving...some are selfish and some extract your ideas and claim them for their own.
Learning how to deal with the situation is like a defensive driving course...and...we know what the best defense is...(for those who don't...it's a great offense...of course!)
So, here are some of Yenta's tried and true tips for the case of the Evil Boss.

1) Get to know your boss...identify his/her "hot buttons"
2) Communicate...communicate...communicate (I can't stress this enough! beware don't overdo it..this can backfire and be used against you..don't worry, in time you will find the right balance
3) Don't fall prey to "he/she won't last long"...rather think they will be there forever..it will help you focus
4) Don't manage up...NEVER EVER complain to his/her manager....believe me the next level manager will see right through this and after all...this person is the next level's hire!
5) Make your boss look good...it's so important that others praise you to your boss..it will build a Teflon shield around you
6) "Giving" your manager a concept or idea is the key to "Manage your Manager"

I guarantee, when you get through Step 6 your misery will turn to confidence and you will live happily ever after...(til the next time!)

It's 11/11/11...there are at least 33 reasons to celebrate this day...Happy Veteran's Day...

Making Lemonade Out of Lemons

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

When daydreams become nightmares we must adopt the "lemonade out of lemons" action plan...In other words..
How can you know you don't like something if you don't try it...I am not suggesting you give up on your dreams or aspirations but, in a world where we are strapped by economic challenges, unemployment, real estate woes, political mayhem..it seems to your EY that the best advice is to be creative. It's the bold (and I am not speaking of the Bold and the Beautiful..if you know what that is...this post is definitely for you) that survive.
Choose a company that you would like to target. Write a letter to the CEO...tell them who you are and why you want to work there. Send them a message on Linked In. Don't stalk! Approach...if it's really a place where you feel a passion to be and you are able to demonstrate that passion..I guarantee the CEO will answer you.
Let me know..I am eager to hear your results..

Health, Wealth and Work...

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Your dear Yenta has been away from the keyboard for a while. Her pooch has been under the weather and this brings mixed thoughts about what's important...and...what's next...(of course)
The recent events with Steve Jobs puts things into perspective about living life. But, when a living being near and dear to you is not well...it strikes a chord closer then not knowing the CEO of Apple.
So, don't wait until someone is sick...show them love, affection, and caring every day...that, dear followers is the BEST medicine...I have watched our pooch regain her strength as we look to uncover what might be causing this distress

I saw this in the vet's office last week:

"A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself"

This post is for Mabel Marie....prayers are welcome (and they don't cost anything)

Trust Your Gut..Don't Depend on Your Horoscope

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Life's experiences afford us the opportunity to develop an inner self awareness. It's great to have friends who can listen and advise...but, it's important to realize that when we come to a fork in the road...trust your own instincts..I'll bet that 99.9% of the time they will show you the right way...
Your dear EY learned this life's lesson this week....if it doesn't "feel" right then it isn't right...
I'm not saying you shouldn't give things a chance...but, if there's something gnawing at you...examine it...there's a reason....in life there are no coincidences....everything happens for a reason...
Now go out there and enjoy this weekend!

Revenge is Personal and Justice is Societal

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

A lot of times when your EY is NOT looking for a topic one of her trusted followers strikes a chord and EY springs into action...

While it might seem enticing to seek revenge on a co-worker, friend or let's say a "foe"....the energy spent may not succeed the "expected" outcome...sure...lots of people believe in Karma...(EY is one of them) but, doesn't Karma seem forever when we prefer instant gratification?...we want to know that the source of our suffering is suffering immediately...if not sooner...

Don't wish harm to anyone...instead...when you think of them in your mind's eye...surround them with mirrors...
If they give out good energy they will get good energy if they don't..well...than they have no one to blame but themselves!..Justice will be served...by their own hand...or...is that "reflection"...

The Tootsie Pop

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Your EY enjoys giving advice and once in a while it's important to note..that even an Employment Yenta needs to seek advice as well...sometimes when you are into the mode of giving...you forget that you can and should receive as well...
This morning, EY found herself in a dilemma...she was stuck...and...she reached out to her friend...we'll call her "Mrs E"...to remain completely anonymous...(not to be confused with a psychic! Mrs E is a true gal pal of EY)...
Mrs E said:  Channel your inner Employment Yenta and take her advice....
How true is that...who knows you better than you!...we all have a Mrs E in our lives...next time you are stuck...check in with yourself!
For those of you who remember Tootsie Pops...it took a while to get to the center!!

Never Lose Your Mojo!

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers..

Now that we have put Labor Day to rest...it's time to focus on a crisp new start for the Fall.
Sometimes we become complacent....satisfied with the day to day...we don't question what might be..
It's important not to lose your "flair"...everyone has "flair" in a different way....whether it be at communications...power point...presentations or politics...yes, even that!
Whatever your "savoir faire"...keep it alive...practice...network...

Less Labor for Labor Day

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Caution: Keep Off The Grass (Sometimes!)

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

There comes a time in one's career when we are faced with possibilities....maybe we are comfortable where we are in life...things are running on even keel....and...then.... "Super Recruiter" makes a visit and provides us with "possibilities"....more money....bigger title...different industry...all things add up to "excitement".
It feels great to go for interviews and find out...we "are" great....it seems...we are the next best thing to sliced bread! Our egos run rampant....and....our current roles...well, suddenly we feel we are not appreciated...we aren't getting the accolades we deserve... the "new" company sees so such promise ..and... we question...why is our current management sitting on their hands...
Sound familiar??
Well, the grass isn't always greener...there are brown spots everywhere...there are times when we are so caught up with the excitement.....we only see what we want to see.
I'm not here to tell you not to take a risk...I am all about risk and reward...but, keep your perspective... make a list of pros and cons...does your current company offer you things the new company will not (i.e. flex time)
So, take a walk on the grass...but, be aware...it's not ALL green!

The New Kid on The Block Syndrome

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

"The New Kid on The Block...comes with some rules and rather than "regulations", I would prefer to say..."reservations".
It's tempting to burst upon the scene and try to "Help" by  infusing your way of doing things.....processes, etc. (this is often known as: "this is how we did it in my former life")
As appealing as it might be to jump in and spout your ideas...it's better to..sit back...observe..and..gauge the team dynamics...
You want the team to buy your ideas without you having to sell them...
 Gaining trust takes time!

EY's New Gig

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

EY has been busy building her new home...and...as many of you "don't" know..she is crazy about John Mellancamp...(actually, she liked him when he was known as "Cougar"!)...anyway...one of her fav songs is "Little Pink Houses"... so, she thought she might paint her house PINK but wasn't sure that would go over too well.
It's not Little House on the Prairie...or...Little Shop of Horrors (heaven forbid)....or even a PINK elephant!
So, this installment is about "compromise"....the best things in life are things we can agree on...it's too stressful to dig your heels in....even if you know you are right...come to terms and and find a common middle ground...
You'll find in the end...you will have more fans in your work life and your family life if you can come to a solution that makes good sense for all involved.

Going With The Flow

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Over the years, EY (on occasion) has found "going with the flow" to be a difficult task...when you think about it...the tree branch that bends in the wind survives while the resistant branch snaps...sometimes not taking action in a situation and going along with the stream will find you up river quicker and less of a drain on your psyche...
So, next time you are faced with an issue....conflict or anxious situation....RELAX...go with the flow and let things unfold...
You might be pleasantly surprised!

Reassessing your Goals

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

We are at the half way mark of the year...at this time your employers will be asking you to take stock in what you have achieved so far...this is a measure for the future and if you have derailed...it will help you back on track.
BUT, is your work life the only thing you want to consider?...How about your family and friends? are you giving them enough time and attention?
Attention to detail...can mean many things...and..EY suggests that you reassess your personal goals to achieve your true objectives...
Remember...when you don't feel well...you call your employer to "call out"...it's not a call for help!
Keep things in perspective!

Leave the Drama to Reality TV!

Hello Help Wanted Seekers!

Someone recently sent me a status post....I agreed with it 100% and re-posted it to my Facebook page....Leave the Drama behind!  Life is filled with so many wonderful surprises and we are here for such a short period of time...don't waste precious moments on DRAMA....daily drama drains us of positive energy....look for the good and forget the bad...for me..the glass is always half full...and...it wasn't always like that...BUT...when you live life and eventually become an Employment Yenta you have the benefit of "experience"...don't sweat the small stuff and don't get dragged down by the Drama Queens and Kings...

Beware of the Razzle Dazzle!

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!...and...TGIF...do something special for YOU!

Your favorite Yenta talks a lot about moving out of your comfort zone...stretching your muscles to reach higher levels...but, with this comes a word of caution...it's great to catch the Brass Ring...but, we need to be "prepared" and know what to do when an opportunity presents itself and when it might be "too" much of a stretch...know yourself...know your capabilities...don't bite off more than you can chew!....If it sounds too good to be true..than it is too good to be true...trust your instincts...remember when the rubber meets the road the "razzle dazzle" can lose it's sizzle pretty darn quick!

Happy 4th...A Time for Independence

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

As discussed in previous posts...help comes in many forms and is not restricted for those seeking employment.
Your favorite Yenta is a mom too...and..there comes a point in our lives when we need to empower our kids with their own independence. The biggest "job" in life is making sure our children can "navigate" in their own lives when we are no longer available...this is a BIG life lesson...especially for an Employment Yenta, who gets to see first hand the "mistakes" or "pitfalls" along the way...
Kids need to experience these things on their own to grow and develop into adulthood...remember when you were learning to ride a bike? Your dad or mom "let go" and you rode off thinking they were still holding on...to your delight you either took off..or...you fell...if you fell..you dusted yourself off and climbed back on..
Think Independence...and...let go!

The Art of Politics...

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

There is definitely an art to the "etiquette" of the workplace...School prepares our brain to think...but, that's not  enough to be successful....It takes a big person to say you're sorry and a bigger person to accept the apology...Life in the fast lane, dearest followers does not come complete with a road map...Get a mentor...someone who you can trust to tell you...the good and the bad...the big lesson here is....there's always my story....your story and somewhere in the middle...the real story....
Don't throw anyone under the bus! If you do...next time...there may be someone else in the driver's seat...

The Misunderstood Email

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Remember in life...once you say something either written or verbal..you can't take it back...you can get sucked into the Internet vacuum and have all your little lint balls out there forever....so, if you've had a misunderstanding...write the email...save it in draft...invoke the Yenta 24 hour rule of waiting...review the mail....how would you feel if you were on the receiving end??....think of all of the possibilities...the good...the not so good and the very bad......it is true that things always look worse at night...that's where the term "nightmare" comes ...so, dear followers....have as many "daydreams" as you can...and...always weigh your actions to out weigh your consequences....

Work is not Show and Tell.....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Here's a popular quandary...granted we spend more time at work then we do at home...work colleagues can morph into friends...it only seems natural that we share our personal items with the people we see everyday...after all, what's wrong with asking Sue or Jim.."how was the vacation?"....But, we walk a fine line when we begin to share information about our spouses, significant others and extended family. Sure, it's comfortable to confide in the person(s) we see everyday...I mean..who knows you better? ...work friends!....  we have coffee together in the am...lunch in the pm..and..let's not forget all the conversations about the "Evil boss"...we laugh, we cajole and create so many inside jokes....we find our "other" friends just can't relate...it's not the same as dropping by someone's office and casting a knowing grin that inspires gales of laughter.
Sharing intimate details of your personal life can be political suicide...imagine yourself standing at the water cooler and talking about Sue...now, think about Sue and Jim talking about YOU and your "big" night. and all of the other people who said..."have I got something to tell you....but, promise you won't tell".....
Yenta says,...like the Energizer bunny....."it's keeps going and going and going"......there are too many people out there who haven't been discreet....and...look where they are now!

The Job Hop...Not a Very "Hip" Hop

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

The following is a multiple choice question:
What does job hopping do for your career?

a) it makes for a very long cv/resume
b) it shows the interviewer that you don't have a commitment to the organization
c) changing jobs before two years in role doesn't give the employer or the employee adequate time to demonstrate the return on investment
d) money and title are your drivers
e) all of the above

The answer is "e"...all of the above

The largest cost (and investment) to an organization is bringing someone new on board. It's not the recruitment costs.. it's the time and effort that go into acclimating a new recruit and training them..Once on board a new hire is not fully functioning for a least 3-6 months depending on the complexity of the organization. After learning the environment it usually takes another 6-9 months to build relationships within the business unit and extended company.
Yenta says..."Give yourself a chance to shine in your role"...think about it...how long did it take to find your current role??...the more you move the less likely someone will be inclined to take a chance on hiring you...So, your dear Yenta advises..."stay a minimum of 24 months....36 months is better"..and...you just never know...maybe someone else will "hop along" and you will be in the right place at the right time.... since you proved yourself....the organization will move YOU up...

Mirror Mirror On the Wall....

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Does it really matter who's the fairest of them all? Well, maybe....in the spirit of being open....observe a person when they are "not" getting what they want...that,  my dear followers is the real person. Anyone can act good in the good times...it's how we act in the not so good times that really count!
A good friend of Yenta's (you know who you are:), shared with me the other day..that people should reflect...think of your behavior as you would look at yourself in the mirror..how will your image present?....how will the world perceive your actions?"....Remember one's perception "is" their reality...
It's almost the weekend. ...(I know "almost" only counts in hand grenades and horsehoes!)...BUT, ...here are the Yenta approved plans for the weekend....Have FUN!

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

"Help" is not exclusively for those unemployed...the biggest job you have is lining up your next job........social media is a platform...a starting point... ...it gives us the ability to connect and network....take it to the next level....TALK.....get on someone's calendar.....now that's a novel idea...isn't it?...

Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You!

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

I guess you may be thinking...this is "just" another sermon..but, things aren't always the way they seem..at least at the time...so dear followers read along and your Employment Yenta..will tell you a little story.
On my way to work..it's a beautiful day...the sun shining through the sunroof...music playing....when all of a sudden "Jump"...no sillies...not Van Halen singing...I was jarred from my reverie by the guy who illegally passed me from the right...blasted his horn....and...what else?...a "Hand" signal....hmmmm.....
Ok, maybe I was going a little slow... I was "trying" to enjoy the ride and savor every moment.
By the time I got to my desk the incident (as I call it) was a memory...UNTIL...
I went to reception area to collect my 9:00 ....Ding ding ding...ladies and gentlemen..we have a winner..
Yes, it was Mario Andretti.....he looked at me and said..."this isn't going to be good is it?"..
Now this Employment Yenta is a very fair and square kind of girl...and...she always gives the person the benefit of the doubt..but, in this case..there was no doubt at all....if he treated me...(a perfect stranger) that way...then how would he treat his co-workers....
Well...it wasn't good but, perhaps it wasn't bad...because I think Mr. Andretti learned a life's lesson...
So, always treat people the way you would like to be treated..because you never know when you will meet an Employment Yenta!! (Just call me "T")

The Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth!

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

Today is your lucky day...you have received an offer that you can't refuse. .during the process and in the recruitment propaganda was "the application" ...all of the information you provide from this point forward must be "verifiable"...remember...fudge is for eating...not for making an untimely mess ...ensure your compensation accurately matches your W-2. Bonus payments and stock options are separate and apart from your base salary. Your cv should mirror the information on the completed application.. Recruiters know the market place and their antennas go up when they see something that might be construed a different way... Less concerning are the "references"...after all...are you going to provide someone who will say something bad about you?
Who knows better than your Employment Yenta about these things:)..Just call me "T"

Planes, Trains & Interviews

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers!

When preparing for an interview...go the distance....
Learn the company...visit the website...
Come prepared with a list of questions for both the Human Resources interview and the Hiring Manager(s) interviews.
Don't ask questions about benefits...Do ask questions about the "corporate culture".
Don't ask where the gym is.....Do ask what the "greatest" challenge will be for the year.
If you have your schedule ahead of time...know your interviewers...look them up on Linked In
Remember, your dazzling personality and noted research (although not on "your" schedule) may find you ultimately sitting with "The" decision maker....
Be ready! Eat something before you leave the house...the last thing you want is your tummy playing a combination of the Star Spangled Banner and a clogged drain.
Embarrassing to say the least it will cause you to lose focus.
For some Yenta approved yummies check out Jimmy Scones kitchen!
Now, go and have a good weekend...you worked for it!

The NEXT Installment....Are you asking "Y"?

Hello All Help Wanted Seekers...
Help Wanted comes in different forms...so, here's a tip from the Employment Yenta for all of those who are  connected to a Generation "Y"....

Last year my son, a college junior was traveling abroad. He called on a hot summer afternoon and announced, "Brace yourself, Mom I have something to tell you".
After a long gasp, I responded..."You got a tattoo".....amazed by my intuition he replied..."yes, but, don't worry I made sure my t shirt sleeve covers it".

Openly wearing your accoutrements...tattoos, piercings and flip flops...is the same as publishing your Facebook page....keep your settings "private"

Never Burn A Bridge

Hello All  Help Wanted Seekers!

Never ever burn a bridge! In today's changing employment scene, make sure people "smile" when they remember you.
Yesterday's news can become tomorrow's future.
My first job years ago was for a Financial Institution. After four years, I left to join another firm. I knew immediately I had made a mistake but, it was too late.
Nineteen years and a few companies later...I was working on a recruiting project.
The light bulb went off as I connected my former company's geography to the assignment I was working on...
I called my first boss...and...she replied...."how about coming to see me...I can help".
Not only did she help me with finding some top quality people....she asked me if I wanted to "come back home"
So, nineteen years later...there was no place like home
